Press release
The Icelandic Directorate of Immigration has launched a new website. The purpose of the website is to improve access to information and instructions regarding applications submitted to the Directorate as well as other issues handled by the Directorate. The aim of the website is to provide clearer guidelines to enable clients of the Directorate to submit the documents required with each application, at the beginning of the application process, thereby shortening the processing time. The Directorate of Immigration kindly suggests that clients take the time to study the guidelines provided in regards to the type of permits they are applying for.
The website is divided into four main sites, where guidelines can be found for the various types of residence permits, visa applications, Icelandic citizenship and lastly individual’s right to asylum or other type of international protection. Every effort has been made to provide accessible information and clear instructions/guidelines. The website is, however, a work in progress and comments and suggestions - regarding substance, access or other issues - can be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. Annual reports for the years 2011 through 2013 are being finalized and will be published on Tuesday October 21st, 2014. The reports have unfortunately, for the past few years, been put on hold due to the Directorate’s increased work load. The Directorate hopes that its reports will provide a useful contribution to the future discussion and coverage of immigration issues in Iceland.
O.b.h. of the Directorate of Immigration,
Kristín Völundardóttir, director
