Applications and applicable supporting documents shall be submitted to the Directorate or the nearest District Commissioner‘s office.  The Directorate forwards the work permit application and employment contract to the Directorate of Labour for processing.

There are three categories of residence permits based on employment:


Residence permit based on temporary shortage of labourers:

A foreigner may be granted a residence permit based on temporary shortage of labourers if employees are not available within the local work force or within the European Economic Community area, the EFTA countries or the Faroe Islands.
This permit is temporary and can be renewed for one year.
Family reunification is not permitted.
This permit is not basis for a permanent residence permit.


Residence permit for a qualified professional:

A foreigner may be granted a residence permit in Iceland based on the need for qualified professionals in specialized areas.
This permits is not intended for temporary assignments.
According to the Foreign Nationals' Right to Work Act, the applicant’s expertise shall be essential to the respective firm and shall entail university education, trade qualification, artistic skills or technology education which is recognized in Iceland.
Family reunification is permitted.
This permit is basis for a permanent residence permit.


Residence permit for athlete:

Temporary residence permits may be granted to athletes and coaches on contract with sports clubs within The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland.
The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland’s website, www.isi.is lists the sports clubs affiliated with the association.
Family reunification is permitted.
This permit is not basis for a permanent residence permit.


A foreigner who arrived in Iceland before August 1, 2008 and was issued a work and residence permit (B- or C- permit according to repealed provision in Section 35 of Regulation No. 53/2003) may apply for a renewal of that permit, if he/she has held a continuous permit since his/her arrival.

Family reunification is permitted.
This permit counts toward a permanent residence permit.
