Re-granting of Icelandic citizenship

The Icelandic Directorate of Immigration draws attention to the fact that the deadline for applying for the re-granting of Icelandic citizenship under the Interim Provision of the Icelandic Citizenship Act, No. 100/1952 is 1 July 2016. 
 
Under this provision, persons who acquired the citizenship of another state before 1 July 2003, and lost their Icelandic citizenship in consequence without this being demanded by the state concerned, may apply to the Directorate of Immigration to be granted Icelandic citizenship anew.  Applicants shall be domiciled in Iceland or shall meet the residence requirements stated in Article 12 of the Act.

Telephone hours for case handlers
For questions regarding residence permits, visas and Icelandic citizenship applications in process:
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
 
Telephone hours for lawyers
For questions regarding residence permits, visas and Icelandic citizenship applications:
Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
 
For questions regarding asylum applications
Thursdays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
 
Switchboard 444 0900 is open 10:00 to 14:00 Monday through Friday for all general enquiries.

Record number of applications for protection in 2015

In the year 2015, 82 individuals were granted protection by the Directorate of Immigration. The largest group were Syrians or 17 individuals. In total, persons of 26 nationalities were granted protection in 2015. The largest group of protection seekers that year were Albanians.

Opening hours during the holidays

The Directorate of Immigration will be closed on the 24th, 25th and 31st of December, as well as 1st of January. The Directorate will be open as usual between the 28th and 30th of December.
