During the first quarter of 2015 the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration issued a total of 861 residence permits to people of 84 different nationalities.
The largest group was Americans who accounted for 17,5% of all issued permits. Five other nationalities were prominent as well: Filipino, Thai, Chinese, Canadians and Vietnamese. Between 45 and 75 people of each respective nationality were granted residence permits. After these were Russian citizens with a total of 28 permits.
Residence permits for relatives of Icelandic citizens and for students and their relatives were the most common types of permits. A total of 545 such permits were issued, accounting for 63% of all issued residence permits. The third most common type of permits were permanent residence permits, including permits for relatives of people with permanent residency.
A total of 30 applications for residence permits were denied during the first quarter of the year. Therefore, just under 97% of all applications were granted. This is similar to previous years.
Out of 253 applications for Icelandic citizenship a total of 229 applications were granted. In all, 91% of all applications were granted. Six people were granted release from Icelandic citizenship.
